Low Pressure Sodium lamps (LPS) also known as SOX lamps are HID lamps, operated at low pressure, in which the arc is carried by ionized sodium vapour. They can be used for roadway lighting, security lighting, or any application where colour rendering is not important. They are generally not used in new construction.

LPS lamps are more closely related to fluorescent than HID lamps, since they have a low–pressure, low–intensity discharge source and a linear lamp shape. An LPS lamp consists of a U–shaped arc tube enclosed in a clear tubular outer bulb. LPS lamps do not contain any mercury.

It is imperative that users adhere to the specified operating positions and fixture requirements in order to maximize lamp performance and life. Incorrect operating position may create the possibility of a lamp rupture.

HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. These lamps produce light by means of heating a gas with an electric arc (as opposed to the incandescent lamp which produces light by electrically heating a solid wire). All HID light sources require auxiliary equipment (such as a ballast, capacitor, and/or ignitor) to provide the appropriate electrical values for starting and operating.
