Metal halide (MH) lighting systems can be characterized by white light, long life, and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Most commonly used in shopping malls, auto dealerships, grocery stores, gymnasiums, arenas, outdoor sports lighting, highbay industrial, cold storage, and parking garages and lots.

Two main types of metal halide lamps exist: probe start and pulse start. Probe start lamps, often referred to as traditional, is the most common metal halide lamp. Pulse start lamps eliminate the internal starting probe and add an ignitor to the ballast circuitry, which improves performance. Pulse start technology lengthens life, increases output, and is more efficient.

HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. These lamps produce light by means of heating a gas with an electric arc (as opposed to the incandescent lamp which produces light by electrically heating a solid wire). All HID light sources require auxiliary equipment (such as a ballast, capacitor, and/or ignitor) to provide the appropriate electrical values for starting and operating.
